That’s exactly what happened to a bright, funny girl named Anne Frank. Born in Germany in 1929, Anne was just an ordinary kid who loved to laugh and dream about becoming a writer. But when the terrible time of World War II started, things changed fast. Because Anne and her family were Jewish, the Nazis—a group led by Adolf Hitler—made rules that made life scary and unsafe for them. To stay alive, the Frank family had to say goodbye to their normal life and go into hiding. They lived in a secret room for over two years! What Was the Secret Annex?
The place where Anne and her family hid was called the "Secret Annex." It wasn't a fancy castle or a big secret base; it was a small, hidden apartment tucked behind her father, Otto Frank's, business offices in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
The entrance to this hiding spot was cleverly covered by a movable bookcase—talk about a secret door! Anne, her sister Margot, her parents, and four other Jewish people crammed into this space to avoid being caught by the Nazis.
Life in the Secret Annex was very quiet and very careful. They couldn't make much noise, open the windows, or even run around! They had to live by strict rules so the people working in the office downstairs wouldn't hear them.

How Long Did Anne Frank Hide?
Anne and the seven others spent a total of 761 days hidden away from the world. That’s more than two whole years! They went into hiding in July 1942 and were discovered by the police in August 1944.
Imagine missing birthdays, holidays, and just going to the park for that long! Anne celebrated two birthdays while living in the Secret Annex. Even though they were scared, Anne kept writing almost every day to her diary, which she named 'Kitty.'

How Did Anne Become a Famous Writer?
Anne didn't just write about what she ate for dinner. She wrote about her hopes, her fears, her dreams of becoming a journalist or a writer after the war, and even arguments with her sister and mother!
One day, she heard a message on the radio from the Dutch government in England. The message asked people to save diaries and letters to show what life was like during the war.
This gave Anne an amazing idea! She started rewriting her diary entries into a novel she called *Het Achterhuis*, or *The Secret Annex*. She wanted the world to read her story when the war was finally over.

Why is Anne Frank's Story Still Important Today?
Sadly, the people in the Annex were discovered on August 4, 1944, and sent to terrible concentration camps. Out of the eight people hiding, only Anne’s father, Otto Frank, survived the Holocaust.
When Otto returned home, Miep Gies gave him Anne’s diary papers. He kept his promise to Anne and made sure her words were published so the world could read them.
