What is Jerusalem? A City for Three Faiths
Jerusalem is a truly unique spot on Earth because it is considered a holy city by three major monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. These are sometimes called the 'Abrahamic Religions' because they all trace back to the prophet Abraham.
For Jews, Jerusalem is the holiest city, the place where King David made it his capital and where the First and Second Temples stood. For Christians, it is sacred because of the final, important events in the life of Jesus, like his crucifixion and resurrection.
And for Muslims, Jerusalem is the third holiest city, after Mecca and Medina. Islamic tradition tells of the Prophet Muhammad’s Night Journey, which started in Mecca and ended in Jerusalem before his journey to heaven.

How Did King David Make Jerusalem Famous?
For kids learning about the Bible and ancient Israel, one of the most important early moments in Jerusalem’s story happened around 1000 BCE when King David captured the city.
Before David, it was ruled by a group called the Jebusites. When David took over, he chose it as the capital of the united Kingdom of Israel because it was a great central spot between the northern and southern tribes.
King Solomon Builds the First Temple
David’s son, King Solomon, took the city's importance even further. About 40 years after David captured the city, Solomon built the magnificent First Temple right there! This made Jerusalem the absolute spiritual center for the Jewish people. It was an amazing building that showed their devotion to God.

After the First Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BCE, the Jewish people were sent away for a time. But the Persian King Cyrus later let them return to rebuild the city and the Second Temple!
