The Wright Brothers: Inventing the Airplane

The Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, are credited with inventing the first successful airplane, the *Wright Flyer*, achieving controlled, sustained, powered flight on December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Their success hinged not just on building an engine, but on pioneering aeronautical engineering, especially their development of a three-axis control system informed by their rigorous testing in a homemade wind tunnel and their prior experience with gliders and bicycles. The first flight lasted only 12 seconds, but the longest flight that day covered 852 feet in 59 seconds.
